Not many realize how much a historical movement can affect its fashion. The term, “zeitgeist,” known as “spirit of the times,” is the word used to describe this effect of style and lifestyle in our society. A dominating attitude towards a certain topic discussed all around the country is a crucial factor within the Zeitgeist.
The attitude towards makeup has been recently evolving. As people once believed makeup was a use of a beauty enhancement, people are starting to view makeup as a work of art, and as a personal expression that portrays someone’s creative, beautiful self. Get ready to see a huge movement in the makeup industry during the next years.
For decades, society has promoted a waif-like body as the societal ideal, and recently people have advocated the need of having “real” models that portray the diversity and range of sizes of woman. Recently, there has been a turn and the movement for natural beauty and embracing a person’s own body. Aerie recently released an AerieREAL role model campaign that showed, real models in images throughout the store that are were not retouched. Sports Illustrated also released the Swimsuits for All ad that promotes body confidence within women.
Changing attitudes aren’t limited to how women’s bodies look, but also how they display them in public. Public breastfeeding has been a big controversy over the past years in which people have different views towards it. Some believe it is personal and private, yet others believe that since it is a natural occurrence after having children that it should not be discriminated, asking, if companies post racy advertisements in public, why should women cover up or leave when they are breastfeeding? Recently, clothes have been designed for women who are breastfeeding, making it easier for them to feed their babies in public.
Speaking of women and babies, Beyoncé’s Grammy performance celebrated her as a fertile goddess and brought a message celebrating how women can embrace themselves and rise to power. Her latest album Lemonade also opened us up to her life and mentioned how there is a need for equality for all races and genders. Many celebrities praised her performance, especially Adele when she made her acceptance speech after winning the Best Album of the Year Award.
If you are afraid your makeup looks too much, or you don’t think you can pull off your outfit, or is afraid of what people willthink of you in public—Think again. It is time for us women to make a statement and show who we really are rather than what people want us to be. By no means should a woman be ashamed of who she really is. Show off your new makeup trick, wear all the clothes in the world and don’t be afraid of the natural beauty that you were given—Create the lifestyle that represents YOU.
