Take a second and imagine years into the future, and your car is driving itself, and you don’t just have a smart phone, but a smart house. The Zeitgeist is the spirit of the times and dominating technology is a part of that – from smart phone projections on a user’s forearm to shirts that button themselves, we are just at the beginning of the era of fashion and technology embracing each other.

Fashionistas all over the world that would give anything to experience just one runway show at New York or Paris Fashion Week. Now, with virtual reality, companies such as Samsung and IMAX are giving people this opportunity without leaving their home. Samsung has partnered with designers at Fashion week to create the Gear Virtual Reality headset that allows a 360-degree view of the latest collections, and details of these looks. One will feel as if they are sitting front row at the hottest runway fashion show. With high-hopes, designers will partner with companies such as IMAX to include their runway shows at a IMAX Virtual Reality Centres, giving us a chance to experience Fashion Week through a dig444ital fashion presentation.

 

Wearable technology has taken the tech world by storm, and now the fashion
industry. Apple not only replicated our smartphones in a watch, but created multiple desirable and appealing design aesthetics for the Apple Watch. Now we are being introduced to the Cicret Bracelet, a smartbracelet that enables users to view the screen of their smartphone on their forearm with full touch screen capability, and full access to phone. The bracelet has a fitness tracker-style band, and has a projector within that allows for the entirety of your smartphone screen right onto you, and without your phone needing to be nearby. Just as the Apple Watch is offered in different styles and colors, the Cicret Bracelet will be offered in different colors. Smartwatch or a smartbracelet? Decisions. Decisions.

 

111All this new technology would be meaningless if it did not help those that are disabled, and in need. “Healthwear” is the term for fashionable clothing for those with disabilities and illness. Inspired by her husband’s Parkinson’s disease, Maura Horton has created MagnaReady, which offers different shirt styles that infuse magnetic buttons as closures. Angela Luna designed her graduation collection for Parsons School of Design in recognition of the refugee crisis. She designed outerwear to insure shelter, flotation, and visibility; such as a coat that transforms int222o a tent. Lucy Jones has created a collection for wheelchair users, making minimal, trendy clothing, but designing it with ease for the wearer taking the garment on and off.

 

So, how can you get on the technology train? See a virtual fashion show, and get inspired for your own wardrobe. Find a piece of techwear that is both smart looking, and thinking. Wear an outfit that does more than just cover you up, and share with somebody. A world without any of these technological advances would be flat-out boring and dull. Thankfully, what we have now are options, and the options are becoming endless as technology continues to advance.
