Are You Caring?

Picture1 Every society’s attitudes are constantly changing, and ours is no exception. For young people today, the desire to fit in means having an attitude that stands out from the past. Do you think you’ve mastered an IDGAF attitude? Well today, not caring is not cool. Most people’s attitudes today include strong feelings on big topics like uplifting women in society, rejecting homophobia and supporting same sex marriage. Teens have a reputation for being self-centered, but they care about many social issues and show they care with their own special twist.

All that caring comes at a price – young adults and teens have developed the “FOMO’ Picture3or “fear of missing out” attitude. These individuals check their social media morning, noon, afternoon, evening, and night so that they always know what their friends and families are doing and are up-to-date with the newest trends. With that being said, they believe they are entitled to having the newest shoes or hairstyles modeled by their favorite artist or actresses. They want their parents to buy them anything they set their eyes on and they want it in the fastest way possible because missing out is not acceptable. Don’t you wish you had that power?

Thin has always been in, but now we are recognizing that beauty comes in every Picture7size and shape as plus-size and everyday women are a reflection of today’s attitude toward women’s appearance. ModCloth and Dove have started campaigns to have natural everyday women instead of thin, photo shopped fashion models. Music artists have also joined in to empower plus-size women as well. Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” and Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass”Picture8 have topped the charts to portray a positive image on the “curvy” women and expand our beauty ideal. Even though these companies and artists mean well, some women are currently insulting the skinny body type, by implying that plus-sized women are in and skinny women are out. Looks like we still have a ways to go to realize ALL women are beautiful!Picture2

Homosexual acceptance is increasing and becoming a dominating attitude as well. Same sex marriage is now legal in 35 states and in our nation’s capital. Gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders can openly serve in the military now. Transgender actressPicture5 Laverne Cox from the Netflix show “Orange is the New Black” becomes the first openly transgender to be nominated for an Emmy. Many people loved her white gown on the red carpet and it quickly became a trending topic. The homosexual community has gained so much more acceptance in the past few years, one day it may be hard to remember that same-sex marriagePicture6 used to be illegal.

Consumer attitude has switched to the opposite angle of things. They are more accepting of minority groups and want to share similar taste with them. Fashion will no longer be rebellious, but a new form of acceptance because today’s kids have the attitude of caring and caring has to be on your cool checklist. So, how cool are you?

Clothes Speak Louder Than Words

Do you want everyone to know what you believe? Do you want to feel free to wear what you want without judgment? 2015 is the year to do that. People want it to be known what they believe and show that they strive for same ideals as everyone else.
Equality is an ideal that is being demanded and highly vocaPicture1lized. More than thirty states have legalized same sex marriage to date, which demonstrates this topic is an ideal that people are getting behind. Since it is a highly personal ideal, it is a big trend for individuals to wear clothing that shows support and lets people know where they stand. You will see items of clothing with a rainbow on it representing the rainbow flag that stands for gay pride. Bright colors are being worn because of the popularity of the support of gay pride. Not only is the equality ideal inspiring people to wear their cause, but people are feeling more accepted, which may encourage them to choose bolder fashions without the fear of being judged.
With America moving towards more equality for all, people are feeling more pride in their country. Patriotism is an ideal that is not new but is still going strong. Patriotism, kick-started in 2001 after the attack on the WorldPicture3 Trade Center, pride for your country is a trend that has stuck around. With the release of American Sniper this year, people want to show their patriotism. With this growing ideal red, white, and blue will be sticking around. It won’t be hard to find a shirt or shorts that sport stars and stripes. With more products being made in the US (a trend known as “reshoring”), patriotism is a trend that is here to stay.
Along with dressing for what they believe people also want to dress for how they feel. With living healthy becoming a new obsession in America, people want to dress in a way that makes them feel athletic aPicture2nd healthy. People are no longer satisfied with just working out; they want everyone to know they do as well. Active wear can be found everywhere and even luxury brands have teamed upwith sports brands to create active wear lines. Walking down the street you see more yoga pants than you will jeans. Jeans are declining and people want a more comfortable look. People are also wearing accessories that help them keep track of their workout. You look around a runtitledoom and you will spot many wrists sporting a Fitbit. Consumer preference has switched over to comfort over design while still making people feel appealing and confident.
All of these trends relate to one another by showing that people no longer think it is enough to think something  you have to show it, or wear it. People are no longer just using their words to support an ideal, they want people to know what they believe without saying a single word.
